2010 League Events & Bag Tag ChallengesMarch 22 2010

EDGA is pleased to announce that Thursday "Singles League" will start on April 29th and Sunday "Doubles League" will start on May 2nd.  Each of these organized events have had their times & rules revised so please check out the regular events page for additional information.

We have also taken the time to revisit the "Bag Tag" challenge system.  At the end of the 2009 season there was a growing animosity amongst the players regarding the previous rules.  The root of this animosity was how challenges were initiated and accepted during non-league rounds.  With that in mind we have taken out that aspect of the challenges.  Challenges are now optional and can be refused during these non-league rounds.  EDGA still encourages challenges between friends but players can now enjoy casual "fun" & "learning" rounds without the need to put your tag up for grabs.

Additional information regarding these events & changes can be found here.

Ice Bowl SuccessFebruary 22 2010

Edmonton's Ice Bowl was a smashing success once again!  This year's event saw 28 participants hit the course to raise money for the Youth Emergency Shelter Society.  The event started off rather cold with a temperature of -12C (with a windchill of -17C) but by the middle of the second round the temperature had risen to 0C (with a windchill of -4).  The cold temperature and the 28" of snow did little to quell the enthusiasm of the players though and their heartiness helped raise $375 for YESS.

EDGA would like to thank all those who came out and participated in the event as well as a special thanks to all those who donated their time, energy and prizes to make this event possible.

Ribbons Are ManditoryFebruary 16 2010

A likely controversial and polarizing rule for this year's Ice Bowl event will be that some sort of ribbon or some other form for easily identifying a buried disc will be mandatory.  With an average of 2 feet of snow covering the entire surface of the course it will be simply too time consuming to search for every disc after every throw.  During a few practice rounds over the last couple weeks even unmarked putters were getting lost on missed 30 foot attempts as they would bury in and slide below the surface.

With those experiments in mind EDGA has decided that ribbons will be mandatory.  For those concerned about the change in disc characteristics you need not worry as many players have experienced just a slight decrease in range as a result of the drag caused by the ribbon but nothing that can't be adjusted after a few initial throws.

Through the process of trial and error the best method for attaching a ribbon to a disc is by centering the ribbon on the underside of the disc and securing with a light weight but waterproof adhesive tape.  Tuck Tape is a strong choice as it's extremely sticky, waterproof and does not leave any sort of residue when pealing the tape off later.  Discs secured in this manner (see picture) have held up to 25+ throws and have not shown any signs of weakness.

Father of the Frisbee Dies At 90February 13 2010

Walter Fredrick Morrison, whose post-World War II invention of a 'flying' plastic disc became the American recreational icon known as the Frisbee, has died at age 90 of age-related causes. Wham-O Inc. has sold more than 200 million Frisbees since Morrison sold the company the rights to what he called the Pluto Platter in 1957. The roots of today's aerodynamic Frisbees go back to 1937, when Morrison and his future wife tossed a large popcorn can lid back and forth for fun during a Thanksgiving party.

The passing of Maurice "Mo" RobillardDecember 16 2009

EDGA is sad to announce the passing of Maurice "Mo" Robillard, a great person, friend, and an individual who made everyone at the course smile and make a round of disc golf that much better, not to mention the amazing art provided for our events through out the years.  You will be dearly missed by all, and hope that the stars around you help you find your destiny.
